Course Overview

My name is Ginny Robards, and I co-created this course on the Mediterranean Diet for with Dan Pardi. I am a researcher with a lifelong interest in biology and chemistry. Very early in my life, I became particularly fascinated by nutrition, because it enables us to take advantage of scientific knowledge to improve our health and performance. Plus, I've found it to be a subject where the more you learn, the more interesting it becomes.

We have known for many decades that people who consumed the traditional diet characteristic of the olive-growing areas of the Mediterranean region were unusually healthy and long-lived. Modern nutrition science has slowly uncovered reasons why the individuals who eat this way enjoy these benefits.

In this course, you will learn the history of the Mediterranean diet, and why researchers originally became interested in the dietary pattern. You'll also learn more about what the literature says on the diet and its effects on different systems of the body - like your heart, your metabolism, and even your mind. We'll also take a deeper dive into some of the possible underlying mechanisms to figure out what exactly these foods are doing inside the body, so that you can structure your own diet to pursue these same health benefits.

How it works
Here are a few tips to get the most out of this course:
  • Don't feel like you have to watch it all at once. The course is divided into short 5-10 minute lessons. Our goal is to have you retain all the key points so take it slow and aim to get as much as you can from every lesson. In one sitting, you can watch as many or as few lessons as you see fit.
  • Repetition is the mother of learning. We encourage you to go through lessons more than once to reinforce your retention of the concepts. There are quizzes interspersed throughout the course, not just to see what you know, but to help you retain what you're learning.
  • Share with others. Perhaps the best thing you can do to get the most from a course is to discuss what you learn with your friends and family. Why? Well, it will challenge what you know. If you aren't able to explain something to your satisfaction, go back to the course, re-review, and try explaining it again. The better you can explain it, the better you can live it. And as an added bonus, you can help others around you to become healthier and better informed.

After you become fluent in understanding the virtues of this diet, we can also help you apply the diet to your life. We have two Mediterranean Diet Recipe Packs - one devised by Chef Arielle Giusto, and the other devised by Chef's Samantha and Chris Mener - so be sure to check those out. These recipes packs will really help you to turn your knowledge into results, and to share it with your loved ones.
